1.Select healthy sugar cane plants. The thicker, the better. Sugar cane that has been burnt will also be suitable for planting. Remove flowers using a sharp knife or sickle.
2.Chop off upper leaves and split sugar cane stems into approximately 30 cm or a ruler length pieces. Longer pieces will also be suitable.
3.Dig a furrow, to the depth of half the length of a ruler. This can be done by using a spade or hoe. Large scale sugar farmers will ideally have more sophisticated equipment to dig these furrows.
4.Pre water the furrow, using a hose or by irrigation. This will not be necessary if you are planting large square miles or hectares of sugar cane.
5.Place stems horizontally into furrow and cover with soil. Do not plant stems upright. They will not grow.
6.Wait and watch for sugar cane plants to grow. Shoots will start to grow from the nodes of the stem, breaking through the soil to form individual sugar cane stalks.
7.Plants will take approximately 4 - 6 months to mature, or be ready for consumption. This is a low maintenance crop that does not require any additional labor as the plants will grow effortlessly even under harsh weather conditions
